NASHVILLE, TN (July 15, 2026) — Few traditions define bluegrass music more than the art of storytelling. From murder ballads and mountain legends to songs of redemption, loss, and hope, the genre has always found its greatest strength in unforgettable narratives. With the release of "Pinewood Prison," Ashleigh Graham not only embraces that tradition—she elevates it.

Available everywhere now, “Pinewood Prison serves as the first single from Ashleigh Graham & Appalachian Highway's forthcoming Pinecastle Records album and officially introduces a newly reimagined touring band whose collective experience, musicianship, and chemistry mark an exciting new era for one of bluegrass music's fastest-rising voices.

Penned by acclaimed songwriters Mark "Brink" Brinkman and Paula Breedlove, “Pinewood Prison unfolds like a cinematic Appalachian drama. The haunting tale follows two generations forever changed by one tragic decision—a young wife imprisoned after killing her cheating husband gives birth behind bars, only to lose her daughter to the foster care system. Years later, fate delivers a heartbreaking twist as that daughter ultimately finds herself returning to the very same prison.

The result is a masterclass in narrative songwriting—equal parts bluegrass tradition, Southern gothic, and emotional realism.

"I immediately connected with the story when I heard it," says Graham. "My first thought was, 'This feels like a musical Taylor Sheridan-style spin-off to As Good As Dead.' I knew I had to record it. Steve Wilson created an arrangement that paints every scene so vividly, allowing the story to unfold exactly as it deserves."

Produced by Steve Wilson at Oakway Music House and featuring Graham's unmistakable lead vocal, the recording pairs haunting melodies with razor-sharp acoustic musicianship from one of bluegrass music's most accomplished new ensembles.

For Ashleigh Graham, “Pinewood Prison arrives at precisely the right moment.

Raised in the heart of Appalachia, Graham has spent her life immersed in the traditions that shaped bluegrass music. Inspired by her father's fiddle playing and the songs that echoed through festivals, churches, and mountain communities, she developed into one of the genre's most authentic young voices while remaining deeply rooted in its heritage.

That authenticity propelled her breakthrough Pinecastle Records debut, I'll Just Drive, into one of bluegrass music's biggest success stories. The album spent six consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Roots Music Report Bluegrass Album Chart, remained in the Top Ten for ten weeks, produced multiple nationally charting singles, and earned Graham widespread acclaim throughout the industry. Her remarkable breakout year culminated with four appearances on the second-round ballot for the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year

Now, rather than simply building on that success, Graham is redefining what comes next.

While longtime fans know Ashleigh Graham as one of bluegrass music's premier traditional vocalists, Appalachian Highway represents something even bigger—a touring and recording ensemble assembled from some of the genre's most respected musicians.

The lineup features:

  • Jason Fraley — guitar and vocals, longtime member of Deeper Shade of Blue, Wilson Banjo Co., and Wayne Taylor & Appaloosa.
  • Steve Wilson — banjo player (founder of Wilson Banjo Co., formerly of Deeper Shade of Blue and Dale Ann Bradley), producer, engineer, luthier and one of today's most respected architects of modern traditional bluegrass.
  • Will Potts — bass and vocals, an ETSU Bluegrass graduate whose résumé already includes performances alongside Trey Hensley and Appalachian Road Show.

Together, they create a live and studio sound that honors traditional bluegrass while delivering the energy, precision, and emotional depth expected from today's premier touring acts.

What makes “Pinewood Prison unforgettable isn't simply its heartbreaking premise—it's the humanity woven throughout every verse.

Breedlove recalls the moment the song truly came alive during the writing process.

"When I realized her only memory of her mother would be a number on a prison graveyard stone, I got goosebumps. I hoped listeners would feel the same. When Brink brought the melody to life and Ashleigh chose to record it, I knew the song had found exactly the right voice."

That voice has become one of bluegrass music's defining strengths.

Warm yet commanding. Traditional yet unmistakably modern. Graham possesses the rare ability to make every lyric feel deeply personal while allowing listeners to step inside each story she tells.

With “Pinewood Prison, that gift reaches new heights.

The single not only introduces Appalachian Highway—it establishes the creative direction for what's to come as Graham continues expanding the boundaries of contemporary traditional bluegrass without ever losing sight of the music's Appalachian soul.

With a national touring schedule filling rapidly throughout 2026 and 2027, a powerhouse lineup behind her, and one of the year's most compelling story songs leading the way, Ashleigh Graham isn't simply enjoying momentum.

She's entering the most exciting chapter of her career.

"Pinewood Prison" is available now on all major digital streaming and download platforms.
