Common Loon Records Signs Mandolin Virtuoso Thomas Cassell

Collaborative Album Slated for Summer 2026 Release

Dothan, AL — December 19, 2025 — Common Loon Records is proud to announce the signing of acclaimed solo artist and mandolin standout Thomas Cassell. The partnership marks an exciting new chapter for Cassell, with the label set to release a collaborative album in the Summer of 2026.

Originally from the sacred bluegrass mountains of southwestern Virginia, Thomas Cassell is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished mandolinists of his generation. Deeply rooted in tradition while continually pushing the boundaries of modern bluegrass, Cassell brings both technical mastery and emotional depth to every performance.

Cassell currently plays mandolin with the Wood Box Heroes, earning numerous appearances on the Grand Ole Opry. He is also a founding member of the respected progressive bluegrass group Circus No. 9 and has built an impressive résumé as a sought-after sideman, performing with artists such as Billy Strings, the Bryan Sutton Band, Jim Lauderdale, Nefesh Mountain, Missy Raines, and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, among many others.

His accolades reflect his standing in the bluegrass world. Cassell was named National Mandolin Champion in 2021, IBMA Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year in 2020, FreshGrass Mandolin Champion in 2021, and RockyGrass Mandolin Champion in 2016. He is also a two-time alum of the prestigious Acoustic Music Seminar in Savannah, Georgia, where he studied under luminaries including Darrell Scott, Bryan Sutton, Mike Marshall, Aoife O’Donovan, and Julian Lage.

The upcoming collaborative album on Common Loon Records will showcase Cassell’s artistry in a fresh setting, pairing his distinctive mandolin sound and unique vocals with like-minded musicians and songwriters to create a project that showcases the talents of others as much as his own.
